INTRODUCTION

French expressions about cold.

Here are some French expressions related to cold.

“Il fait un froid de canard”

– It’s freezing cold. (Literally, “It’s a duck’s cold,” referring to a very cold, biting wind.)

“Avoir les dents qui chatouillent”

– To have your teeth chattering. (A playful way to describe the physical reaction to cold.)

“Être gelé(e)”

– To be frozen or extremely cold. (Can be used for both people and things that are very cold.)

“Avoir la chair de poule”

– To have goosebumps. (Literally “to have chicken skin.”)

“Ça caille”

– It’s freezing. (A colloquial way to describe very cold weather.)

“Être comme une glace”

– To be as cold as ice. (Used to describe someone who is emotionally distant or literally very cold.)

“Avoir froid jusqu’aux os”

– To be cold to the bone. (Describes feeling very cold, as though it’s deep inside.)

“Se les geler”

– To freeze one’s butt off (informally, used for describing extremely cold conditions).

“Frissonner de froid”

– To shiver with cold.

“Il fait un froid de loup”

– It’s as cold as a wolf’s cold. (Similar to “cold as a dog’s nose,” referring to extremely cold weather.)
